Canonbury 2011

Het wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar vrijmetselarij heeft al betere tijden gekend. Het Center for Research into Freemasonry and Fraternalism van de Universiteit van Sheffield werd vorig jaar gesloten, na het overlijden van Malcolm Davies werd de Leerstoel Vrijmetselarij aan de Rijksuniversiteit Leiden niet meer ingevuld en niemand lijkt te weten wat de toekomst daarvan zal brengen, de jaarlijkse studiedag aan de Sorbonne van Cécile Révauger gaat ook niet meer door en de tweejaarlijkse ICHF, einde mei in Alexandria, had meer weg van een gezellig maçonniek samenzijn dan van een echte academische conferentie. 

In deze tijden van onzekerheid blijft het Canonbury Masonic Research Center in Londen overeind staan. Maar ook daar zijn, zoals elders, financiële kwesties die achter de schermen meespelen. Hoe je het ook draait of keert: wetenschapsbeoefening op het vlak van humane wetenschappen, en zeker in zo een specifiek domein als het onze, is per definitie altijd verlieslatend. Vaak moet je hopen op de goodwill van de overheid of van mecenassen om zulke evenementen te kunnen laten doorgaan 

De jaarlijkse Canonbury Conference belooft in ieder geval weer veelbelovend te worden (en ik zeg dit niet alleen omdat ik er zelf aan zal deelnemen). Algemeen thema is dit jaar Freemasonry and Empire. Meer informatie is te vinden op de website, en het voorlopig programma ziet er als volgt uit:

Evening film screening (for conference goers) at University College London. Dr Annamaria Motrescu of the Centre of South Asian Studies, University of Cambridge, will introduce a series of recently digitised amateur films depicting freemasons in an Imperial setting titled: Imperial masonic relations: freemasonry in amateur films. The evening will finish with a discussion and wine reception.
